God is love
That is a direct quote from the bible. 1 John 4:8
Let that thought sink in for a moment. The word translated “love” here from the original Greek is agape – This is important to note as in English we only have one word for “love” but in Greek there are four types of “love”.
The earliest copies we have of the “New Testament” are written in Greek (biblical Greek) and if you don’t know Greek then you have to read a translation in your own language and some languages are more rich than others in both number of words (vocabulary) and the meanings of those words based on context and root meanings to mention a few.
Agape in Greek means “selfless love” a love that is not based on conditions. If you do this for me then I will love you is not an example of agape “love”.
Its used for example in John 3:16 when it says “God so loved the world” – The word used there indicates God’s unconditional love in sending His son Jesus into the world. – Not to condemn the world but that the world through Jesus might be “saved”. We need to unpack that word saved later.
How many of us have experienced agape love? For now, in this article, let us remember that God IS Agape love.
